In the words of the final show we were able to fully produce (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels):
"It was a ball, it was a blast
And it's a shame it couldn't last,
But every chapter has to end,
You must agree."
We began Regatta over 10 years ago in the hopes of providing a creative outlet in town for high school graduates looking for a place to continue to engage in theater. And we have done so much more than that. We have been graced by talent from all over Massachusetts and beyond. We have produced a wide variety of shows that have stretched the boundaries of what we ever thought possible when we first began. We not only created a successful theater company; we created a theatrical home for artists and audiences alike.
So it is unquestionably difficult to have to announce that we have decided that it is time for Regatta Players to close its doors for good. We know we aren’t the first theater company to make this sort of announcement, and sadly we’re aware we won’t be the last. We have not reached this decision lightly. We’ve all experienced so much loss this year, and this one certainly weighs heavy on our hearts. However, most theater companies struggle to stay afloat, even in the best of times. So unfortunately, COVID-19 and its effects have left us with little choice in this matter. And so, after 10 years, we’re closing the curtain on our beloved company.
While our company’s time may be coming to a close, we will never take for granted what the last 10 years have meant to us and our community. We have loved welcoming actors, creators and audiences to share in the theater magic we’ve been privileged to create at Southgate. We’ve treasured every first rehearsal, every opening night, every closing night party. All those small moments shared backstage and all of those magic moments onstage, in the musician’s pit, or in the tech booth. Regatta became a theatrical home for so many, and we will forever treasure the friendships, memories and art that we made together. We are infinitely proud of what we accomplished.
We’d like to extend a huge “thank you!” to everyone who was a part of The Regatta Players. There are far too many to name here. But your contributions to our company will always be treasured. The connections we made, the magic we created, and the stories we told will forever live on in our hearts and in our memories. And isn’t that the beauty of live theater? Isn’t that why we do it in the first place?
Regatta will always be a part of the story we tell about our theatrical past. And so, in the words of the first show we produced (Baby):
“And thus it is, our story goes on.”
